Shabbat Shalom { From Rebecca Kraemer }

This week's Shabbat post comes from our Volunteer Coordinator, Rebecca Kraemer. In this position, Rebecca is responsible for making sure that every JFS program is assisted by passionate and committed volunteers who are eager to help make a difference in the lives of JFS clients. We're excited to feature her today!

Shabbat has always been a very special time for me. All my life, I have looked forward to celebrating Shabbat every week, because I love having the opportunity to take a break from the craziness of everyday life and focus on what truly matters - spending time with my loved ones and appreciating what we have.

I am proud of the work I do for JFS. Recently, I planned a special event honoring our agency's many volunteers, and more than 200 people attended! After months of hard work, when the event was over and everyone was congratulating me on its success, I felt truly happy - and truly ready for a long, restful Shabbat!

I hope you enjoy looking at some of the photos from the JFS { Volunteer Appreciation Celebration. To view more pictures, click here!

At the event, we presented the fourth Charlotte Kamenir Volunteer of Distinction Award - we were honored to have Charlotte and her family there!

Wishing you and your loved ones a Shabbat Shalom! Enjoy your Memorial Day Weekend!

JFS { SOVA Welcomes Volunteers From the University of Kansas!

From time to time, JFS { SOVA welcomes special groups of volunteers to our three pantries. These individuals join our regular volunteers in making sure our pantries run as smoothly as possible, helping unload pallets, sort food, distribute grocery bags, and assist in the intake process.

On Monday, May 21st, we welcomed a group of volunteers from the University of Kansas, who were in Los Angeles participating in an "alternative spring break experience." These six young students were a huge help to our SOVA Metro staff and volunteers for several hours, and we are grateful they chose to volunteer at JFS { SOVA!

JFS { SOVA loves our volunteers! If you are interested in volunteering with us, please click here for more information. We would love to have you!

Congratulations to Roz & Abner Goldstine!

We here at JFS would like to wish a big Mazel Tov to our longtime friends and supporters, Roz & Abner Goldstine, who recently were honored as the 2012 KCET Local Heroes as part of Jewish American Heritage Month!

When it came time to submit names for the nomination, JFS staff immediately agreed that the Goldstines were the perfect choice for this honor. As dedicated and generous community leaders, their support of JFS throughout the decades has meant so much to so many people. We invite you to click here to read more about the Goldstine's efforts on behalf of the Jewish community, and please enjoy this video as well:

JFS { New Moms Connect at the Capitol

As Coordinator of the JFS { New Moms Connect program, Gabrielle Kaufman is responsible for helping new mothers and their families work through obstacles related to postpartum depression in order to lead happy and healthy lives. Today, she shares her experience at the Maternal Depression Press Conference.

Yesterday, I was honored to join the Junior League of California, California Maternal Mental Health Collaborative, the California Legislative Women's Caucus, The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Los Angeles County Perinatal Mental Health Task Force and Assemblyman Roger Hernandez at the Sacramento Capitol Building to join the Maternal Depression Press Conference.

The conference brought together leaders from all across the country to present on emerging treatment models and best practices for maternal mental health in the Capitol Assembly Room. Of the model programs presented, USC-Eisner Family Medicine New Family Care Team was presented by Brian Prestwich, MD and Emily Dossett, MD. It was very exciting to be identified as a key member of this New Family Care Team. Other innovative programs were presented and I approached the microphone to introduce myself as a representative of Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles and asked about the ways in which programs address cultural competency.

At the networking luncheon, I had the opportunity to present JFS { New Moms Connect as a model for programs based in a social service home staffed by a team of volunteers, an example of low cost intervention for maternal mental health. I am glad I had the opportunity to be a part of this historic day in Sacramento!

Volunteer Spotlight } Mike Jones

Mike Jones sought out a volunteer position with JFS several months ago, wanting hands-on experience in a nonprofit organization. He began working as a volunteer for the Communications Department in March 2012, and has become a valued member of the JFS family!

Have you ever wanted to snoop in your boss’ desk? Well, that’s what I got to do... but the documents were 50 years old!

JFS keeps its archives at Cal State Northridge- it had been a while since anyone had visited the archives, so a few weeks ago, our team went to check it out. We found hundreds of boxes of letters, documents, records, photos and videos. Because of what we found, I am now working on a project to “connect the dots” between the original organization that was founded more than 150 years ago, and the JFS that serves the community today.

I went behind the scenes to read about why immigration laws impacted JFS and how the agency adapted to the changes. I saw documents that founded various social services to the community.
When the project is complete, I think that everyone will feel good about their connection to JFS. I’m glad to be a part of this project!

JFS { Gramercy Place Family Shelter Needs Your Help!

We need your help!

We are happy to report that recently, several Gramercy families have been moving out of our shelter and into their own permanent housing every month. As a result, we are in need of gently used donations to  help them transition to their new residences.

We are in need of items such as microwaves, refrigerators, beds, couches, dining tables, and other pieces of furniture! Donations of these items will go directly to families leaving JFS { Gramercy Place Family Shelter and will allow them to live comfortably in their new homes.

If you are able to donate any of these items, we would be so grateful! Please contact Deidre Norville at (213) 387-0171 or dnorville@jfsla.org.

The JFS { Gramercy Place Family Shelter is a two-year residential program with supportive services for homeless families. Gramercy specializes in assisting families with children, including single parent mothers and fathers, as well as two-parent families and teenagers living on their own. The program is designed to help families break the cycle of homelessness and move toward permanent housing. Subsidized food and clothing are provided along with childcare, advocacy, tutoring, case management and therapy and an array of other services. Help in finding permanent housing solutions is also provided.

Thank you in advance for your generosity!

Volunteer Spotlight } Louise Taubman

As the art consultant at two JFS { Family Violence Project shelters, Louise Taubman sees the transformations that take place in battered women and children when they are given the opportunity to express themselves through creating a piece of art.

“It’s wonderful when the FVP clients come together for an art class,” Louise explains. “The most rewarding thing is watching a client come in for the first time, and leave a short time later feeling transformed. They are calmer, more comfortable, more self-assured after they take the opportunity to create something.”

Louise first began working with Family Violence Project clients more than two and a half years ago. After completing FVP’s 40-hour volunteer training, she began doing informal art therapy with the women and children living in JFS { Tamar House Shelter and JFS { Hope Cottage, and after seeing the positivity that came of it, JFS applied and received a scholarship for Louise to attend training with A Window Between Worlds in early 2011.

A national program based in Venice, A Window Between Worlds provides art supplies and workshops that aid domestic violence counselors in helping survivors of domestic violence and their children begin rebuilding their lives by expressing their creativity through art. AWBW believes that creating art builds self-confidence, which helps the women find strength in making positive decisions about their relationships, their children, and their future.

Louise’s art classes take place weekly at Tamar House and several times a month at Hope Cottage. She begins each session with a meditation, and explains the day’s project, sharing a specific word or prompt for them to create from. The women talk to one another and enjoy the music playing in the background, all while concentrating on their piece at hand. Every class brings a new type of project – self-portrait masks, affirmation jars, drawing journals, homemade lotus flowers, and canvas collages, to name a few.

Louise values these sessions and freely acknowledges the impact that working with survivors of domestic violence has on her. She considers the time she spends with the women and children to be an honor. “I am privileged to be a part of their journey of healing,” says Louise. “I am constantly surprised by their creativity, their talent, and the way they look at things, but most of all, I am humbled by their incredible strength.”
